The Place Beyond the Pines (2013). Directed by Derek Cianfrance

A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.

The year is almost half over and so far I have only seen one film that has truly blown me away and it was the third feature length film by Derek Cianfrance that did it. Ten minutes after I walked out of the cinema I started crying in the middle of a shopping centre on the Gold Coast.

I’ve seen a few films this year that deal with the ripple effect. How one incident in the past can trigger a series of events that effect the future. That, coupled with a story about being a product of your environment makes for a very emotionally moving film. I loved how this was in three very distinct parts yet the transition between each was smooth. I’ve heard people not liking Act III or thinking it was unnecessary but for me it wrapped up the film neatly and was essential to the story.

This movie definitely needed more Ben Mendelsohn in it, though. I love it when Australian actors like him pop up in American films. Also props to whoever was responsible for Gosling’s tattoos and for making Eva Mendes look so dishevelled. I would very much like to add this to my growing Blu-ray collection.
